Windsor Convening 2026: Honouring Black History, Advancing Global Recognition

The Organization for Economic Development and Diplomacy (OEDD) recently brought together community members, leaders, diplomats, policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, cultural workers and youth for the Windsor Convening 2026: From Underground Railroad to Global Recognition.
Held over two days in Windsor-Essex, the convening celebrated the history, culture, contributions and global impact of People of African Descent while exploring Windsor’s important place in Black Canadian history and its potential role in shaping the future.
Activities included the Historic Black Windsor Driving Tour, a dinner and screening of The Making of A Diplomat docu-series, and the Windsor Convening Symposium. Discussions explored Black heritage preservation, Windsor’s connection to the Underground Railroad, international recognition, reparatory justice, economic development, diplomacy, cultural preservation and the global connections of the African diaspora.
The convening also highlighted the importance of strengthening education and community involvement, preserving stories and heritage, and advancing tourism and economic development in ways that benefit communities.
As the world moves further into the Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025–2034), OEDD looks forward to supporting continued dialogue and action around recognition, justice and development.
The Windsor Convening may have concluded, but the work continues as we honour the past, engage the present and help shape the next chapter.
