About the Black Diplomats Academy

The Black Diplomats Academy (BDA) is a leadership incubator designed to equip young Black leaders with the skills, networks, and confidence to thrive in international diplomacy, governance, and policy. Through mentorship, experiential learning, and real-world simulations, participants gain practical experience that prepares them to influence change at home and abroad.

    Learn how governments and international organizations make critical policy decisions.

    Build confidence and strategic presence. Learn to communicate complex ideas clearly, influence key decisions, and negotiate effectively in high-stakes environments.

    Connect with diplomats, policy experts, and peers from across the globe.

    Take part in role-plays and mock scenarios that mirror global diplomatic challenges.

Introduction to Diplomacy

Covers the foundations of international relations, power dynamics, and how countries pursue their interests on the global stage. Students learn how diplomacy works in practice through case studies, negotiations, and real-world scenarios. This module builds the strategic mindset needed to engage in global affairs.

Diplomatic Protocol

Focuses on the formal and informal rules that govern diplomatic interactions between states, institutions, and cultures. Students learn how to conduct themselves in official settings, from meetings and negotiations to international events. This ensures they can operate with professionalism and cultural intelligence anywhere in the world.

Institutions

Examines how global organizations such as the United Nations, regional blocs, and financial institutions influence policy, development, and security. Students learn how decisions are made, who holds power, and how countries and non-state actors navigate these systems. The goal is to understand where influence actually lives.

Public Speaking

Develops the ability to speak with clarity, confidence, and authority in high-stakes environments. Students practice persuasion, debate, and formal address in diplomatic and leadership contexts. This module prepares them to represent themselves and their communities on international platforms.

Eligibility Requirements

This is a filter. Make it obvious who should apply.

  • Applicant must be currently attending or recently graduated (within 24 months) from a College/University program.

  • Identify as Black/African descent – Between the ages of 18 – 35 years old – Interest in Diplomatic and Public Sector Careers.

  • Available to participate in 4 hours of online module delivery/week.

Application

The application should take a maximum of 45 minutes. Complete this application only once, including the attachment of your CV and references.

  • Co-op placements with mentorship.

    Pair classroom learning with real-world experience. Participants are matched with mentors in diplomacy, trade, and policy to gain practical insights and career guidance.

  • Career exploration workshops

    Interactive sessions help participants explore careers in international relations, governance, and economic development while building transferable skills.

  • Technology & simulations

    Access to digital platforms and simulations for practicing negotiations, crisis response, and cross-cultural collaboration in a safe environment.

  • Weekly learnings labs

    Small-group sessions with diplomats, trade experts, and policymakers provide firsthand exposure to real international leadership.

  • Career Development & Fairs

    From resume feedback to mock interviews, these sessions prepare fellows for internships, graduate programs, and professional roles.

  • Global summit access

    Participants take part in the Black Diplomacy Global Summit to present ideas, debate global issues, and expand their networks.

  • One to One mentoring with senior public sector leaders

    Personalized coaching from seasoned professionals helps participants refine career goals, expand their networks, and develop leadership presence.

  • Internship opportunities with Global Affairs Canada 

    Select fellows gain hands-on diplomatic experience in Canada’s foreign service environment, working directly with missions and policy teams.

  • Travel abroad opportunities for representation on policy platforms

    Fellows have the chance to join international delegations, representing youth perspectives at major multilateral summits and global forums.
